Puerto Rico designates popular beach as natural reserve

Puerto Rico's governor has declared one of the U.S. territory's most popular beaches as a natural reserve.
Alejandro Garcia Padilla says Mar Chiquita will now be managed by the island's Department of Natural Resources and that only ecotourism activities can be carried out in that area.
The beach is shaped like an open fan amid surrounding rock formations and is located in the northern town of Manati.
Garcia said Tuesday that the area has some 164 species, including several that are in danger of becoming extinct.

And the winner is – drum roll – Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico claims the top spot in a survey of United States and its territories seeking where women wore the highest heels. Puerto Rico came in with an average of 2.86 inch heels, with Nevada, Florida, Arkansas and Texas following the island. The survey, titled “Stilettos by State,” was conducted by Gilt , an online shopping site, in effort to see whether fashion tastes varied by location. Nebraska, Kansas and Maine were home to women preferring the shortest heels, just under 1.97 inches. The Gilt survey did not look at boots and ballet flats. High heel averages in states near the top of the list were 2.46 inches in Florida, 2.35 inches in Texas, and 2.25 inches in California. DESTINATION SURPRISE – Aire protégée de Loky Manambato : Un taux d’endémicité de la biodiversité à 84%

  Le complexe de « Loky Manambato » étalé sur une superficie de plus de 70 000 ha constitue une nouvelle aire protégée créée dans la partie nord-est de Madagascar, soit dans la région de SAVA. Cette aire protégée recèle une biodiversité exceptionnelle avec un taux d’endémicité atteignant les 84%. Elle est délimitée par les fleuves de Loky et de Manambato. Parmi ses espèces faunistiques phares, on peut citer entre autres, le lémurien à couronne dorée connu sous le nom scientifique « propithecus stattersalli ». Mais en tout, ce site dispose de dix espèces de lémuriens diurnes et nocturnes dont trois espèces sont endémiques. On y trouve également le plus grand scorpion à Madagascar ainsi que 127 espèces d’oiseaux, dont 44 espèces issues du lac Sahaka, 75 espèces de reptiles et 36 espèces d’amphibiens dont deux espèces de tortues marines.
