Why 'Mortal Engines' Is the New Top Blockbuster Bomb of 2018 Box Office

After Thanksgiving weekend, it looked like the Lionsgate movie "Robin Hood" would be the biggest blockbuster bomb of the 2018 box office. But the Sherwood Forest revamp has now been dethroned by Universal/Media Rights Capital's "Mortal Engines," an adaptation of Philip Reeve's sci-fi dystopian novel that opened to a mere $7.5 million domestically this weekend. Most of this year's box office flops have been mid-budget releases like "Annihilation" and "The Hurricane Heist," rather than blockbusters with $100 million-plus budgets like 2017's "Ghost in the Shell." "Robin Hood" was the closest to that budget mark with a reported budget of around $97 million. But "Mortal Engines" had a budget of at least $100 million, with some reports estimating it as much as $150 million. While Universal doesn't disclose budget figures, it's possible that the studio might not make back its production costs,

'Black Panther' Tops $600M Domestically While 'I Can Only Imagine' Surprises with $17M Debut

For the fifth weekend in a row, Disney and Marvel's  Black Panther  is the weekend's number one film at the domestic box office, becoming the first film to accomplish that feat since  Avatar  in 2009. The film is also only the seventh film to ever gross over $600 million at the domestic box office as it continues to dominate, now less than $18 million shy of topping  The Avengers  and becoming the  highest grossing superhero movie of all-time . As for the weekend's new releases, WB's  Tomb Raider  performed as expected, delivering a second place finish while the big surprise of the weekend was Roadside and Lionsgate's release of  I Can Only Imagine . The faith-based feature delivered a third place finish, defying all expectations, and topped not only Disney's  A Wrinkle in Time  in its sophomore session, but Fox's freshman debut,  Love, Simon . With an estimated  $27 million ,  Black Panther  finished atop the weekend box office for the fifth straight

Is the United States Returning Puerto Rico to Spain?

Image
The United States government has secretly negotiated a deal to return the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico to Spain. In December 2017, word spread quickly via social media that the United States intends to return the territory of Puerto Rico to Spain after a report detailing such a plan was  published  in the Puerto Rican newspaper  El Nuevo Día. The report said the plan was the result of secret negotiations between the United States and Spain (translation ours): A hundred and nineteen years after the Treaty of Paris, which enabled the transfer of ownership of Puerto Rico from Spain to the United States, Madrid and Washington have virtually finalized an agreement to return the jurisdiction of the Caribbean island to the European country, endi.com sources have confirmed.  The deal, which has been negotiated in secret for at least two years, is not yet official, but it has the approval of Presidents Donald Trump of the United States and Mariano Rajoy of Spain and certain technical
