Memorable Weekend for "Madagascar"?

Rick Munarriz nailed this one. In a preview of DreamWorks Animation's (NYSE: DWA) latest outing at the domestic box office, Rick theorized that Madagascar might perform on par with the animation company's previous release Shark Tale. According to early estimates at boxofficemojo.com, he was right: Madagascar took in approximately the same amount in its debut Friday-through-Sunday time frame ($47.1 million) as did Shark Tale in its own opening weekend ($47.6 million). Adding in Memorial Day brings the film to an estimated opening total of $61 million. It was almost a given that Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith would remain in the top spot. And the logic that powered Rick's supposition about the first-weekend monetary dynamics was sound. But my gut told me that this was going to be at least a $50 million-plus three-day weekend for the crazy animated animals and their goofy on-screen antics. One issue that affected the film's prospects was Viacom's (NYSE: V

Assessing 'Madagascar'

For audiences, "Madagascar" is a buddy comedy, but for investors, it's a suspense film. And the suspense won't end when box office figures for the opening weekend come out. They'll just be a starting point for speculation on the real potential thriller: home video sales. The video, which accounts for the majority of most films' revenue, won't come out until November. "We look at the theatrical release of every movie as a promotion for the DVD. If it does well theatrically, that's a big advertisement for the film on home video," said David Miller, an entertainment analyst with investment bank Sanders Morris Harris' Los Angeles office. The pressure on "Madagascar" video sales is especially high because DreamWorks Animation, based in Glendale (Los Angeles County), missed its first- quarter earnings target due to a big disappointment in "Shrek 2" video sales. After "Shrek 2," the sequel to the popular fractured f

Moviemaking in 2 places at same time (Joseph Szadkowski)

Relocation became a common theme for the characters and production staff of DreamWorks' latest animated film, "Madagascar," which opens tomorrow. The movie's story involves a zebra, giraffe, hippopotamus and lion who are to be transferred from the cushy confines of New York City's Central Park Zoo to a Kenyan animal reserve. Through the meddling of a crack team of penguins, the four friends instead find themselves in the untamed wilds of Madagascar, which leads to plenty of hilarious situations. For the makers of the film, moving was a bit less amusing. Usually, producers, directors, writers and staff members convene in the same city for several weeks or months to prepare for and execute a movie shoot. "Madagascar" producer Mireille Soria, whose credits include "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas" and "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," immediately had a logistical problem in that she could not get her entire team to commit
