The arrival follows an US$8 million port renovation. Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla says Puerto Rico expects to welcome a record 1.7 million cruise ship passengers next year. Puerto Rico designates popular beach as natural reserve

Puerto Rico's governor has declared one of the U.S. territory's most popular beaches as a natural reserve. Alejandro Garcia Padilla says Mar Chiquita will now be managed by the island's Department of Natural Resources and that only ecotourism activities can be carried out in that area. The beach is shaped like an open fan amid surrounding rock formations and is located in the northern town of Manati. Garcia said Tuesday that the area has some 164 species, including several that are in danger of becoming extinct. Puerto Rico designates popular beach as natural reserve

The holidays, and specifically Christmas, is overabundance at its peak which means that the more alcohol you serve at your Christmas party the better time your guests will have.  Makes perfect sense! But if you are tired of the typical Christmas cocktails and looking for something a little different to serve your rowdy crowd this year, allow me to introduce you to  Coquito ! Coquito is, simply put, Puerto Rican Coconut Eggnog, but what they don’t tell you is that it is absolutely the perfect holiday drink to sip on while opening presents, singing carols, looking at lights, and pretty much any other Christmas activity you can think of! Coquito  is traditionally served in Puerto Rico and is made with rum, egg yolk, coconut milk, sweet condensed milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. What better way to add some fun to your holiday festivities than with a sweet yet spicy Latino drink. Of course you can always change up the ingredient list above to make your Coquito just t...

Puerto Ricans in Trouble? La Borinqueña to the Rescue.

Image
As a kid,  Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez  used to walk around his neighborhood collecting cans. Things were tough in the '80s for a "Puerto Rican nerd" growing up in New York City's South Bronx—where muggings and arsons were commonplace. "The only thing that was a safe place for me was reading, and comic books," he says. But the comics were a strain on the wallet for a kid raised by a single mother on public assistance, so Miranda-Rodriguez turned to recycling for extra cash. His favorite comic book hero was Spider-Man. He gravitated toward Peter Parker's shyness and awkward traits. In Parker's brown hair, he saw a representation of himself: "He's the closest thing to a Puerto Rican I can see in comics," he recalls thinking. Now Miranda-Rodriguez is in a position to do something about that. He writes for Marvel Comics, and his creative services studio,  Somos Arte  ("We are art"), has collaborated with Marvel on gallery exhib...

Banco Popular Christmas Album & Show a Gift 'From Puerto Rico To the World'

Every year at this time,  José Felicano ’s “Feliz Navidad” makes its annual climb up the Latin charts. Another sure sign that the holidays are here? Puerto Rican Banco Popular’s annual Christmastime album. De Puerto Rico Para el Mundo , this year’s Banco Popular production, is currently at no. 13 on the Latin Pop Albums chart. Based on past Banco Popular releases, it could climb as we count down to Christmas: the bank’s 2014 album 2014  Que Lindo Es Puerto Rico  made it to no. 1 on Top Latin Albums; last year’s  Cuba y Puerto Rico Son  topped the Tropical Albums chart. Feliciano, the Puerto Rican crossover pioneer who first made his name in the United States with his version of the Doors’ “Light My Fire,” is one of the artists featured on  De Puerto Rico Para el Mundo . He performs the nostalgic island classic “En Mi Viejo San Juan,” a fitting choice for the album, whose theme this year is the story of Puerto Ricans in the diaspora. “Puerto...
