Island off southern Puerto Rico goes on the market for $2.5 mn

Cayo Ratones, a 10-hectare (24-acre) island off southern Puerto Rico that has just one solar-powered wooden house with a swimming pool, has been put on the market for $2.5 million.

Puerto Rico Sotheby's International Realty is handling the sale and its president, Margaret Peña Juvelier, told Efe that "people from several parts of the world" had already expressed interest in the property.

The small island is just a 10-minute boat ride from the city of Salinas, Peña said.

"We're happy to show the world that things like this exist here. It's fantastic. You have to admit that we have beautiful places in Puerto Rico," Peña said, referring to Cayo Ratones.

The Sotheby's executive, however, did not provide any information about the seller, saying only that the decision to list the property was made because the owner did not use the island "as often" as he would like to.

"This island is unique and very special. It's paradise," Peña said, adding that the asking price was lower than for other islands in the Caribbean and the Bahamas, where such properties go for much more money.

Cayo Ratones is ideal for anyone "who is looking for privacy" and "the most economical" option for a private island, the realtor said.

The current owner put in a solar-powered house with the idea of "respecting the environment and the island's beauty," Peña said.

"The idea of having a private island is lots of people's fantasy. It's like having a vineyard, and that's the kind of person who can acquire places like this," she said.

Cayo Ratones is one of the few private islands in Puerto Rico and the international edition of The New York Times will carry a story on its sale next week.

"This will help put Puerto Rico on the international map," Peña, who has run Puerto Rico Sotheby's International Realty for two years, said. EFE
