'Glass' Ready to Crack Open a $50+ Million Holiday Debut

After just two weeks, 2019 has already had some notable highlights, including the surprise $20 million debut of  The Upside  last weekend while WB's  Aquaman  became the first film in the DC Extended Universe to top $1 billion at the global box office. Now, this weekend is looking to  M. Night Shyamalan 's  Glass  to deliver the second largest January and Martin Luther King Jr. openings ever behind only  American Sniper . Why 'Mortal Engines' Is the New Top Blockbuster Bomb of 2018 Box Office

After Thanksgiving weekend, it looked like the Lionsgate movie "Robin Hood" would be the biggest blockbuster bomb of the 2018 box office. But the Sherwood Forest revamp has now been dethroned by Universal/Media Rights Capital's "Mortal Engines," an adaptation of Philip Reeve's sci-fi dystopian novel that opened to a mere $7.5 million domestically this weekend. Most of this year's box office flops have been mid-budget releases like "Annihilation" and "The Hurricane Heist," rather than blockbusters with $100 million-plus budgets like 2017's "Ghost in the Shell." "Robin Hood" was the closest to that budget mark with a reported budget of around $97 million. But "Mortal Engines" had a budget of at least $100 million, with some reports estimating it as much as $150 million. 'Black Panther' Tops $600M Domestically While 'I Can Only Imagine' Surprises with $17M Debut

For the fifth weekend in a row, Disney and Marvel's  Black Panther  is the weekend's number one film at the domestic box office, becoming the first film to accomplish that feat since  Avatar  in 2009. The film is also only the seventh film to ever gross over $600 million at the domestic box office as it continues to dominate, now less than $18 million shy of topping  The Avengers  and becoming the  highest grossing superhero movie of all-time . As for the weekend's new releases, WB's  Tomb Raider  performed as expected, delivering a second place finish while the big surprise of the weekend was Roadside and Lionsgate's release of  I Can Only Imagine . The faith-based feature delivered a third place finish, defying all expectations, and topped not only Disney's  A Wrinkle in Time  in its sophomore session, but Fox's freshman debut,  Love, Simon .
